As we all know the cost of living and energy price rises are going to affect everyone, so we have written this blog to try and help give you some ideas on how to reduce your bills. Here are some ways to help in short term and the long term:
Insulation:
External insulation is a good idea if you live in a semi detached house or a detached house because your walls have more exposure to the elements and you can lose more heat through your walls. Attaching a layer of insulating material to your exterior walls and covering it with plasterwork or cladding can help improve efficiency. Did you know a quarter of heat is lost through the roof of your home? Loft insulation can reduce your bills substantially and will end up paying for itself after a few years. A cavity wall insulation is 2 layers of brickwork with a gap of air between them and provides thermal efficiency. The gap is filled with beads or a type of wool, this could save you around £150 a year which isn’t including loft insulation and double glazing.
New/replaced windows:
When your windows are beyond repair new windows means top quality performance and more thermal efficiency than your previous windows. Our windows are manufactured with energy efficient glazing and high performance seals using our own ERW draught seal for slashing energy bills. All windows are made from thick insulated timber to ensure security and thermal efficiency to preserve heat.
Did you know timber has an average lifespan of 60 years if looked after properly whereas uPVC is around 35 years? This means timber is more cost effective in the long run.
Secondary glazing:
Secondary glazing is installed discreetly into the frames of your windows to provide an extra layer of insulation which keeps your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Our bespoke secondary glazing can reduce heat loss up to 65%, this makes a significant impact on the lowering of your energy bills. Another benefit is that our secondary glazing reduces noise levels up to 80% and slashes a building’s CO2 emissions. Double glazing is the best option but for heritage properties and those in conservation areas it may not be an option which is why secondary glazing is a great alternative.
New doors:
With a new door you want to make sure you are getting the very best, our front doors are manufactured from thick insulated timber which delivers natural low U-value for outstanding thermal efficiency and a reduction in energy bills.
Investing in a new timber front door is a long term improvement to lowering energy bills and with the right care they can last for over 60 years if looked after properly whilst uPVC only last around 30 years.
Optimal home temperature:
According to energy suppliers such as British Gas and Ovo Energy the optimal temperature is around 18-22 degrees celsius, bearing in mind that people respond to heat differently and what may seem warm for some could seem icy cold to others. According to uswitch, you could save £60 a year by turning the temperature down 1 degree.

Timber windows naturally provide a beautiful, timeless aesthetic, instantly bringing warmth and character to any home. They offer the ideal foundation for creating a stunning festive display that can give your home that sought after cozy Christmas feel this time of year. As the days shorten and the outdoor temperature drops, our windows transform into […]
Upgrading your windows is one of the most effective investments that you can make in your property, particularly during the colder months. Outdated or poorly performing windows are often the common cause for heat loss in a home, making rooms feel draughty and inconsistent in temperature, whilst also raising your energy bills. Often, you won’t […]
There’s a common belief among heritage homeowners that you can’t improve your heritage home – let us introduce you to vacuum glazing. Whether it’s the tight constraints of planning permission, or a reluctance to hinder the visual appearance of listed buildings, heritage homeowners are often reluctant to attempt to renovate their home in any regard, […]
ERW has been a major contributor in improving the physical appearance and energy conservation in our property which sits in the middle of Stokesley’s conservation area. In four phases of design and installation since early 2018 you have helped transform our property with complete distinction.
From assistance given to lodging planning applications with Hambleton District Council through advice on window design and final installation, I can give no higher praise than commending ERW on every aspect of installation.
I first visited your showroom and workshop in the Autumn of 2017 and was impressed with the factory tour afforded me by Kirsty Semark (Customer Service Supervisor). I was convinced that ERW could provide the solution to upgrading our ageing timber windows and appreciate the help and courtesy extended from you and all your staff – many of whom I have met during our four phases of installation.
The very recent installation of a new ‘Eton’ front door enhances the front elevation with perfection.
Please convey our sincere thanks to everyone involved with the workmanship, installation and administration.
Mr U, Stokesley
As in all things, there is no substitute for quality. Excellent product connected to a work ethos of ‘only being as good as your last job’ ensures continued quality of service, hopefully, to an ever expanding customer base.
My door is a visual ‘daily delight’. So pleased that I found my way to your factory door.
Mr Taylor, Billingham
I love our new doors. They are absolutely gorgeous and exactly what I’d imagined. Every step of the process has been easy, well managed and clearly communicated, which I have come to appreciate is not always the case.
The installation crew that has been here for the past two days has been friendly and highly professional. They did a great job.
Thank you so much for taking the time to walk us through your showroom and workshop back in December. I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.
Ms Hinthorne
Thank you so much for the windows and front door. They have exceeded my expectations! I was very happy with the two fitters that came, they were very professional, polite and left our house immaculate. I would definitely recommend your firm to a friend and family.
