ERW Joinery, a leader in the restoration of heritage properties, announces its important role in the revival of Middlesbrough Train Station, highlighted during a recent visit by Tees Valley Mayor, Ben Houchen.
With over 40 years of expertise, ERW were appointed by Story Contracting to craft bespoke timber windows for the station. These windows, featuring intricate detailing, echo the original design of the station, blending heritage aesthetics with modern functionality.
Mayor Houchen’s visit to ERW’s workshop on Skippers Lane was not just an observation of the project but also an acknowledgement of ERW’s vital role in the area’s development programme.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Middlesbrough Station is a key gateway into our region and first impressions matter. With direct trains to London now secured, we need to turn this station into one we can show off to the world and be proud of.
“I’m delighted that we’re supporting jobs close to home and using the expertise of local firms like ERW Joinery to build a station that’s fit for the future, restoring the undercroft to its former glory and creating a new entrance, ticket hall and new retail units.”
Previously supported by the Tees Valley Business Growth Fund, ERW has expanded its capabilities, investing in specialist equipment for bespoke projects. This has allowed them to integrate advanced technology with traditional craftsmanship.
Phillip Wall, Managing Director at ERW, comments, “Our involvement in the Middlesbrough Railway Station project is a testament to our team’s skills and passion for heritage conservation. Collaborating with companies such as Story Contracting showcases our expertise and it’s pleasing to see the commitment to use local companies in such important projects. We’re not just restoring buildings; we’re revitalising our community’s heritage.”
ERW’s commitment extends beyond Middlesbrough Train Station, evident in their contributions to other heritage site restoration works such as Darlington yards and the Skelton high street redevelopment. They are also committed to training the next generation of skilled joiners through apprenticeships through local colleges.
